The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. – Benjamin Mays
WHAT IS CAREER COACHING?
Career coaching is often an individual’s first exposure to coaching. Career coaching can help an individual understand their strengths, values, and interests within the context of the larger job role. Career coaching is helpful in navigating the organization’s culture, understanding the individual’s role within the organization, and building effective mentoring and networking relationships while finding personal reward and significance. Typical outcomes from career coaching are identifying job performance strengths and gaps, improving working relationships with peers and the immediate supervisor, and developing a career progression plan.
WHAT DOES A CAREER COACH DO?
A career coach works with an individual (client) over several one-on-one sessions to clarify the client’s long-term goals while helping the client to understand their strengths, values, and motivations. The initial coaching sessions focus on the coach and client building trust and rapport while defining near-term outcomes desired, actions to be taken and challenges preventing success. Later sessions explore opportunities to improve the client’s strengths, values, mindset and environment through reflection, dialogue, and structured exercises. The career coach can significantly help a client to understand the organization’s culture, understand the individual’s role within the organization, and build effective support networks through mentoring and ongoing professional relationships. Typical outcomes from career coaching are identifying job performance strengths and gaps, improving working relationships with peers and immediate supervisor, and developing a career progression plan.
HOW WOULD CAREER COACHING BENEFIT ME?
Clients benefit from improved job satisfaction in the immediate job role through better understand of themselves, their peers, and the overall organization. Clients benefit further through the structured process of career coaching by being more focused, emotional intelligent and capable in their job performance and interpersonal relationships. Clients can improve their overall work performance, align their current job role with longer career plans, and navigate through career challenges more effectively.
HOW DOES CAREER COACHING WORK?
Perspective clients register for an initial exploratory call. In the call, the client explores with a coach what the individual’s goals were for coaching and the available resources. From the initial call, the individual could pursue 1-2 individual coaching sessions or a short-term program of 6-12 sessions. One-on-one sessions are held approximately weekly for 45-60 minutes with a coach. Early sessions focus on clarifying long-term goals. Subsequent sessions focus on results, actions, and challenges facing the client. In these sessions, the coach will help the client understand their strengths, values, and motivations the client can leverage for improved performance, interpersonal relationships, and goal attainment. Throughout the process, the client and coach co-create how to best move forward towards the client’s desired goals through insightful dialogue and actionable next steps. At the end of the requested sessions, the client can elect to continue with a structured program or individual sessions.
